Foundation Statement: How can we interpret to re-invent?
Re-invention, the core of the Hip Hop aesthetic. Taking something that existed once in its on right, reshaping, flipping, cutting, stripping and sampling that something to rebuild it into a necassary new form of the now. Hip Hop, birthed in the trenches of late 70's New York City, the brainchild of poor inner-city youth, through this idea of re-invention allowed themselves to study there own cultural experience as well as the experience of there fellow New Yorkers, while creating a new, vibrant and necessary expression of there now. Through the art of digital music production and songwriting, students will put this idea of re-invention in practice. By digging into there own NYC Heritage and the heritage of there NYC peers and elders, they will "sample" this past to make a musical collage of there tommorow, through the form of a radio program they will showcase the music they will have crafted during the course of the program. Students will leave this program with a greater understand of digital music history, Hip Hop and New York History as well as practical knowledge on how to handle certain professional music programs such as Abelton Live, Guru, Reason and Pro Tools. All of this will culminate in a final evening where students will present “There New York” sounds to the community at large, taking the sound of there community back into there own hands.
